Bankstown Church Approved for 185 Affordable Homes
May 4, 2026
Major approval has been granted for the redevelopment of St Paul’s Anglican Church in Bankstown, paving the way for a 20-storey mixed-use tower that will deliver 185 affordable apartments. The project, led by the Anglican Church Property Trust Diocese of Sydney and designed by Plus Architecture, is set to become a significant addition to the Bankstown town centre.
This state significant development stands out for its strong affordable housing focus, with all dwellings earmarked for affordable rental. In addition, the scheme will provide a new place of worship, community facilities, a childcare centre, and commercial space, reflecting a diverse mix of uses on a prominent Chapel Road site.
The project aligns with the Bankstown TOD Accelerated Precinct controls, supporting increased density and height in the area. While overshadowing and visual bulk were noted as constraints, the approval signals confidence in Bankstown’s role as a strategic growth centre. Construction is expected to generate both short-term and ongoing employment opportunities.
