Leichhardt Oval $47m Refurbishment Gets Approval

A $47.1 million sports and recreation upgrade at 68 Mary Street, Leichhardt has been approved, with the determination issued on 24 July 2026. The State Significant Development covers refurbishment and upgrade works to Leichhardt Oval, including the existing Western Grandstand, seating bowl, and a new northern grandstand.

The project is located on a 145,000 sqm site and does not include any residential dwellings or new gross floor area. The application was lodged by Inner West Council and assessed under the State Significant Development pathway due to its scale and public function.

The proposal is expected to generate around 200 construction jobs, with no operational jobs specified. No changes to planning controls or land use zones were identified in the assessment documents.

During exhibition, the application received 23 submissions, with 10 objections, 6 in support, and 7 comments.
