Community Feedback Shapes 20ha Moore Park South Renewal

On 8 December 2024, the NSW Government released The Future of Moore Park South – What We Heard report, unveiling community-driven plans to transform Moore Park South into a 20-hectare public park.

The Proposal at a Glance

The report captures extensive feedback on reimagining part of Moore Park Golf Course into accessible green space. The proposed park, lodged in February 2024, will retain a nine-hole golf course, driving range, and clubhouse while catering to diverse community needs.

What the Community Said

The consultation process, held from February to April 2024, gathered extensive feedback on the park’s design and features. Key themes included:

  • Recreational Spaces: Strong demand for walking tracks, exercise areas, family meeting spots, and nature play spaces for children.
  • Biodiversity and Nature: Emphasis on habitat preservation, tree planting, and water-sensitive urban designs to enhance natural beauty and environmental resilience.
  • Golf Reimagined: Mixed reactions to reducing the course to nine holes. Many supported retaining 18 holes for its heritage and community value, while others welcomed innovative offerings like night golf and mini-golf.
  • Improved Access and Connectivity: Requests for safe and integrated pedestrian and cycling paths and better connections to public transport networks.
  • Facilities and Amenities: Suggestions for toilets, a café, and picnic areas while ensuring infrastructure does not overwhelm the park’s natural look.

What’s Planned for Moore Park South?

The park will replace part of the western Moore Park Golf Course north of Dacey Avenue, addressing the needs of a growing population expected to increase from 690,000 to 790,000 by 2041. Proposed features include:

  • Tracks for walking, cycling, and exercising.
  • Green spaces for relaxation and informal gatherings.
  • A nine-hole golf course with enhanced technology, night golf, and mini-golf options.
  • Supporting infrastructure such as toilets, activity hubs, and lighting.
  • Integration with local and regional transport networks for seamless access.

The NSW Budget 2024-25 allocated $2.6 million for preliminary design and planning, with construction to commence after the existing golf course agreement ends in mid-2026.

Project Team and Stakeholders

The project involves several organisations:

  • NSW Government: Lead developer.
  • Greater Sydney Parklands: Conducted consultations and prepared the report.
  • Transport for NSW and Local Councils: Collaborating on transport and access solutions.
  • Aboriginal Groups and Stakeholders: Ensuring cultural inclusivity and reflecting First Nations heritage.

Next Steps in the Development

Further community engagement is planned for 2025, with updated park and golf course designs expected mid-year. The project reflects a balance between providing green spaces, preserving heritage, and catering to diverse recreational needs.
