The New Bankstown Hospital has been approved, clearing the way for a major new health precinct at 490 Chapel Road and Raw Avenue in Bankstown. The State Significant Development application (SSD-105396208) was determined on 14 August 2026.

The approval forms part of the NSW Government’s $2 billion investment to relocate and redevelop Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, with the new facility planned to provide an expanded emergency department, operating theatres, intensive care, women’s and children’s services including maternity, mental health facilities and associated research and education opportunities.

The development will deliver a 14-storey main hospital building with three wings, connected by two pedestrian bridges to a separate logistics and multi-storey car park building. The project has a gross floor area of 68,239 sqm across the approximately 38,170 sqm site, with a maximum building height of 64.15 metres.

A total of 971 car spaces are proposed across the multi-storey, basement and at-grade parking areas, together with 50 bicycle spaces and 35 motorcycle spaces. The development also includes new internal roads and hospital access points, traffic signals at Chapel Road and Heath Street, a new roundabout at French Avenue and Meredith Street, new bus stops, a shared pedestrian and cycle path along Chapel Road, utility works and landscaping.

The hospital will replace the existing Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital and is being developed on the former TAFE NSW Bankstown site within the Bankstown Transport Oriented Development precinct. The project is intended to respond to substantial population growth in Canterbury-Bankstown, where the population is forecast to grow by 21 per cent by 2036.
