The Compass Centre at 83-99 North Terrace, Bankstown, is the focus of a $360 million redevelopment proposal. Lodged with the City of Canterbury-Bankstown Council on 11 October 2024, this transformative project by Barings Real Estate Australia, in partnership with Aware Super, aims to revitalise the city’s heart. The proposal is currently on public exhibition until 17 December 2024, inviting feedback from the community.
This redevelopment comes as Bankstown prepares for significant changes, including the highly anticipated Sydney Metro services set to launch in late 2025. Developers aim to create a vibrant mixed-use precinct that integrates seamlessly with the city’s evolving infrastructure.
The Vision for the Compass Centre
The proposal outlines plans to demolish the existing Compass Centre and replace it with a contemporary, mixed-use development. Key features of the proposal include:
- A 19-storey hotel tower located in the southwest corner of the site.
- Two 24-storey residential towers in the southeast and northeast corners.
- Retail spaces, a gym, and a medium-sized supermarket within the five-storey podium.
- A childcare centre and rooftop communal areas for residents.
- New through-site links improving pedestrian access north-south and east-west.
Furthermore, the development includes a two-level basement and three levels of above-ground parking. With 495 car spaces, 185 bicycle spaces, and 27 motorcycle bays, it will meet diverse transport needs. Vehicular access will be provided via Fetherstone Street.

Economic and Social Opportunities
This ambitious project promises to bring substantial economic benefits to Bankstown. By blending residential, retail, and hospitality spaces, it will create jobs during construction and ongoing operations. Moreover, it addresses the increasing demand for diverse housing and high-quality amenities in the area.
In addition to economic advantages, the development prioritises sustainability. For example, the above-ground parking is designed to adapt to other uses in the future as transport needs change. Similarly, landscaped podiums and terraces will enhance the liveability of the precinct for residents and visitors alike.
Designing for the Future
The Compass Centre redevelopment aspires to become a landmark for Bankstown. The 19-storey hotel tower, with its bold architectural design and high-quality finishes, is intended to stand out as a signature feature of the precinct. Moreover, the integration of public art and green spaces will contribute to its appeal, creating an inviting and vibrant urban environment.
Aligned with the Canterbury-Bankstown Local Environmental Plan, the proposal reflects the city’s goals for sustainable, accessible, and liveable spaces. Its strategic location near the upcoming Bankstown Metro station and key civic areas positions it as a catalyst for the city’s broader revitalisation.
